Notice of Non-Discrimination In Vocational and Applied Technology Education
In compliance with the non-discrimination regulations of the Vocational Education Division of the Michigan Department of Education, notice is hereby given that Mar Lee School District, Calhoun County, Michigan does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin or ancestry, gender, marital status, or disability in offering vocational education and applied technology opportunities to students of the school district.

Health Education
According to the State School Aid Act, parents have the right to review the materials and curriculum content used in designated areas of health education. Materials and curriculum guides are available for your review. We will continue to notify parents of human sexuality and mandated HIV/AIDS instruction. As in past years, parent preview is available through the office of the principal of the school your child attends. Prior notification of HIV/AIDS and human sexuality lessons is provided as required by law. If you wish to exercise your right to excuse your child from designated areas of health instruction, or if you would like further information regarding our health curriculum, please send written notice to the principal of your child’s school.
 
Pesticide Notification
Pesticides are periodically applied to school district property as part of the district’s pest management program, in compliance with Regulation 637, Rule 14 of the Michigan Pesticide Act, PA 171. Parents and legal guardians of children enrolled in the district have the right to request prior notification of pesticide applications to the buildings or grounds. In order to be notified prior to the application of pesticides, the parent or legal guardian must make this request in writing to:

Please understand that emergencies do arise and that pesticides may be applied without prior notice to parents or legal guardians. Parents or legal guardians that have requested prior notification, however, will be notified after pesticide application.

Application of pesticides will be performed only by certified or registered applicators where and when required. Notification will be posted 48 hours ahead of application and will remain posted for 48 hours after application (near the main front doors of the school building affected). If a pesticide is applied in a building, students will not occupy the room for a minimum of four hours. When a pesticide is applied to school district grounds, the application will not be made within 100 feet of occupied classrooms, and flags will be inserted in the ground to mark the application area. Upon request, parents and legal guardians have the right to be notified three (3) days in advance, by mail.
 
Student Directory
The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”) requires that Mar Lee School District, with certain exceptions, obtain the written consent of parents (or students over 18 years of age) prior to the disclosure of personally identifiable information from a child’s educational records. Click here to view your parental FERPA rights.

However, Mar Lee School District may disclose appropriately designated “directory information” without written consent, unless you have advised the school district to the contrary in accordance with the school district’s procedures. The primary purpose of directory information is to allow the Mar Lee School District to include this type of information from a child’s education records in certain school publications (for example, a playbill showing a student’s role in a drama production, the annual yearbook, honor roll or other recognition lists, graduation programs, and sports activity sheets showing weight and height of team members).
 
Tobacco Free Schools
The use of tobacco products is prohibited in all buildings and on all property owned by Mar Lee School District. Violations will be handled in accordance with State Law.
 
Immunization Requirements
All children who enter schools in Michigan are required by state law to be fully vaccinated in accordance with Public Act 368 of 1978, as amended. These requirements are for children entering a school district for the first time. Failure to meet these requirements, as set by the Michigan Department of Public Health, requires the school principal to exclude a child from attendance. Local health departments may set requirements that exceed these minimum requirements.

Note: Effective 1/1/2015, parents/guardians must obtain a certified non-medical waiver from a local health department.
 
Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act AHERA
The Environmental Protection Agency requires each year that district workers and building occupants receive notification of asbestos removal or abatement activities such as inspections and response actions.

This notice serves to inform all parents, teachers, administrators, and all other employees that the six-month surveillance period of all buildings, as required by AHERA, has been completed. The three-year re-inspection, also required by AHERA, was performed in September 2015. The next three-year re-inspection will be conducted during the 2018-2019 school year. Each building will continue to have a six-month periodic surveillance and a three-year re-inspection as required by AHERA. All abatement projects have been performed by licensed asbestos abatement contractors.

Any damaged materials containing asbestos, such as floor tile or thermal insulation, found during the inspections has either been corrected or removed by a licensed asbestos abatement contractor. AHERA information is available for public inspection.
 
McKinney-Vento Act
If you have lost your housing and now live in a shelter, motel, vehicle, camping ground, or temporary trailer; on the street; doubled up with family or friends; or in another type of temporary or inadequate housing, your child might be able to receive help through a federal law called the McKinney-Vento Act.
